Thanksgiving Cleaning Checklist: Get Your Central Minnesota Home Holiday-Ready Without Losing Your Weekend
November 2026 | Better Clean | Staples, Wadena & Brainerd Lakes
Thanksgiving is right around the corner! That means family gatherings, delicious food, holiday decorations, and the excitement of welcoming loved ones into your home.
It also means something else.
Cleaning. Lots and lots of cleaning.
Between preparing meals, shopping for groceries, decorating, and managing your regular responsibilities, finding time to deep clean your home can feel overwhelming.
And if you've been following our Better Clean adventures on Facebook, you already know about Dusty, our lovable but incredibly stubborn dust bunny who believes the space beneath your couch is his permanent residence.
Unfortunately, Dusty isn't the only dust bunny hoping to attend Thanksgiving dinner!
The good news? Getting your home ready for the holidays doesn't have to mean sacrificing your entire weekend.
Here are our favorite holiday cleaning tips to help Central Minnesota families prepare for Thanksgiving.
1. Start With the Spaces Your Guests Will Actually Use
You don't need to deep clean every closet, drawer, and storage room before Thanksgiving.
Instead, focus on the areas your guests will see and use most.
Entryways and mudrooms
Living rooms and family gathering spaces
Guest bathrooms
Kitchens and dining areas
Guest bedrooms, if visitors are staying overnight
In Central Minnesota, November often brings wet shoes, muddy entryways, falling leaves, and the occasional early snowfall.
Keeping your entryway clean and organized is a great first step toward making your home feel welcoming.
Better Clean Tip: Put a sturdy doormat near each entrance and designate a spot for coats, shoes, and boots.
2. Give Your Kitchen Some Extra Attention
Thanksgiving and kitchens go hand in hand.
Between roasting turkey, preparing side dishes, baking pies, and feeding a houseful of hungry guests, your kitchen will probably become the busiest room in your home.
Before the holiday, consider tackling these tasks:
Wipe down countertops and cabinet fronts.
Clean the stovetop and backsplash.
Remove expired food and wipe refrigerator shelves.
Clean the microwave.
Scrub the sink and polish fixtures.
Wipe frequently touched handles and switches.
Sweep and mop the floors.
One often-overlooked area? The space around and beneath kitchen appliances.
That's exactly where Dusty and his extended family like to establish new residences!
3. Don't Forget the Guest Bathroom
Nothing makes a guest bathroom feel more welcoming than clean fixtures, fresh towels, and an organized countertop.
Before your guests arrive, give the bathroom some special attention.
Clean the sink, toilet, mirror, fixtures, and floors. Wipe down frequently touched surfaces and make sure there's plenty of toilet paper and hand soap.
A clean bathroom doesn't need expensive decorations. Sometimes fresh towels and a sparkling sink make the biggest difference.
4. Show Your Living Room Some Love
This is where family members will gather, conversations will happen, football games will play, and someone will inevitably fall asleep after Thanksgiving dinner.
Give your living room a little extra attention before everyone arrives.
Vacuum upholstered furniture, dust shelves, wipe tables, clean visible surfaces, and vacuum beneath accessible furniture.
Pay special attention to pet hair, crumbs, and dust collecting along baseboards.
And yes, that means checking beneath the couch.
Dusty, consider this your official eviction notice!
5. Remember the Floors
Late fall in Minnesota can be especially rough on floors.
Rain, mud, leaves, gravel, and eventually snow get tracked into homes throughout the Staples, Wadena, and Brainerd Lakes areas.
Regular vacuuming and mopping can help prevent dirt from accumulating.
For hardwood, tile, laminate, and other flooring materials, always use cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer.
And don't forget those corners and edges where dust tends to collect.
6. Prepare for Overnight Guests
If family members are staying overnight, give their sleeping space a quick refresh.
Wash bedding, dust furniture, vacuum the floor, empty trash containers, and make room for personal belongings.
A few clean towels, an extra blanket, and a convenient place to charge a phone can help guests feel comfortable.
You don't need a luxury guest suite. A clean, welcoming space makes a difference.
7. Break Cleaning Into Manageable Tasks
One of the biggest mistakes people make before the holidays is trying to clean their entire house in a single day.
Instead, spread the work across several days.
One week before Thanksgiving: Declutter gathering spaces, check guest bedrooms, and organize the kitchen.
Three to four days before: Deep clean bathrooms, dust furniture, and tackle larger cleaning projects.
One to two days before: Vacuum, mop, wipe kitchen surfaces, and prepare fresh towels.
Thanksgiving morning: Do a quick final tidy-up, empty the trash, and focus on enjoying the holiday.
Even better? Let professional cleaners handle the bigger jobs so you can spend your time preparing for the celebration.
8. Know When to Call in the Professionals
Between work, children, family commitments, and holiday preparations, finding time for a thorough house cleaning isn't always realistic.
